What is a Colorectal Surgery?

colorectal-surgery

Colorectal surgery is a branch of medicine that treats problems with the colon, rectum, and anus. Proctology is another name for the discipline, but it is no longer frequently used in medicine and is typically used to refer to procedures that specifically affect the anus and rectum.

The digestive system of the body includes the colon. The digestive system helps the body expel waste by removing and processing nutrients (vitamins, minerals, carbs, fats, proteins, and water) from meals. The oesophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines make up the digestive system.

The large bowel or colon refers to the first six feet of the large intestine. The rectum and the anal canal make up the final 6 inches. Surgery to remove all or part of the colon may be necessary to treat colorectal diseases.

Blood in the stool or a change in bowel habits are two potential indicators of colon cancer. All stages of colon cancer are often treated with surgery.
