Esophagectomy is the surgical procedure used to remove all or part of the oesophagus. Frequently, a small portion of the stomach is also removed. The remaining portion of the stomach is subsequently joined to the upper portion of the oesophagus.
Part of the stomach is pulled up into the chest or neck to become the new oesophagus.
